The pirates once again invade Tampa Bay this weekend. Arghh you ready for the pirates to take over downtown Tampa?
Gasparilla season, unique to Tampa Bay, is here! For more than 100 years we have “celebrated” the invasion of pirate Jose Gaspar, who legend says terrorized the coastal waters of west Florida until losing a battle with the US Navy warship in disguise. City of Tampa officials decided to celebrate the victory over evil with a city-wide celebration. It’s the third longest parade in the US!
The Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla launched a “surprise” attack on the city of Tampa. Today a fully-rigged pirate ship, the Jose Gaspar, creeps into Tampa Bay to “attack” the city. A number of pleasure crafts intent on defending the city flank the pirate ship as it docks at the Tampa Convention Center. There the krewe meets the mayor who is “forced” to surrender the key to the city. With keys in hand, the krewe takes over by parading down Bayshore Blvd.
The event is free!
